Meet Clinton's Monique Harris!!

A neat article in the QCTimes, Thursday, Aug31 by
Clinton setter Monique Harris recently was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Phenom List that recognizes elite juniors across the country. She’ll attend a four-day showcase in Louisville, Ky., later this year and play in front of college coaches.
How much are you looking forward to your trip to Louisville?
Our family is treating it like a vacation since we’ve got family down there. I really don’t know much about it, but from what I’ve read it is more like a camp and you get to watch the NCAA Tournament. It should be fun since I love volleyball.
What prompted you to become a setter?
I’ve always done it since I was in fourth or fifth grade because I was the shortest person on my team. I can hit, but I’ve really never been a hitter since I’m 5-8.
How special has it been to be this team’s setter for three years?
It is an honor knowing that I have people older than me willing to accept me and do as I say on the court.
What do you like most about being the point person for Clinton’s offense?
Most people pay attention to the hitters because they get the most ka-boom out of the point, but I like being the commander on the court and knowing what’s going to happen. I get a lot of excitement out of watching someone else succeed from something I helped them do.
How much do you run in a typical match tracking down passes?
A marathon. That is no joke. When the passing isn’t there, I run so much. I think people underestimate my job, but there’s a lot of running involved. You’ve got to be in good shape.
On your Twitter profile, you say “volleyball is life.” What else do you like to do?
It is life. There is nothing else to my life besides volleyball. I do it year-round. I play softball, but I don’t like it as much as volleyball. My heart is in volleyball. I am more a student than a player of the game. I always like to learn new things to make myself better and take myself as far as I can.
You are active on Twitter with more than 3,400 tweets. What are you tweeting about?
I love Twitter, and I’m on it all day during school and between classes. I’m on it way more than Facebook. A lot of the tweets are from my friends.
Do your parents read your Twitter account?
No, no, no. I’d probably be in so much trouble if they did.

Thanks to Matt Coss for doing a great job with Iowa high school Volleyball!!

Clinton Volleyball Player, senior, Alyssa Wing, has been identified as an elite & rising student-athlete and on the 2012 Under Armour All America Watch List

American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) will release the fifth annual Under Armour Watch List
On Monday, August 27 the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) will release the fifth annual Under Armour Watch List and the inaugural AVCA Phenom List to kick-off its fall high school awards season.

The Under Armour Watch List identifies elite high school senior volleyball players who possess the potential to be considered for the Under Armour High School All-America Awards Program.  Clinton volleyball player, senior, Alyssa Wing, has been identified by the AVCA as an elite & rising student-athlete and will be recognized on the 2012 Under Armour Watch List. The watch list will be released August 27 on the AVCA website.   Alyssa has received numerous awards throughout her volleyball career.  She is a two time All MAC performer, including 2011 when she helped her team tie for the Conference Championship & was recognized as an All Stater & the Mississippi Athletic Conference Player of the Year!  Alyssa is eligible for inclusion on this list, because her high school head coach, Mark Massey, is an active AVCA member.  The AVCA feels that Alyssa possesses the potential to be selected as a 2012 Under Armour High School All-American.  In December, the AVCA will name 48 student-athletes as a First & Second Team Under Armour All-American. First team selections will be invited to participate in the Under Armour High School All-America High School Volleyball Match in Louisville, Kentucky.

In order for a student-athlete to be eligible for placement on this watch list her high school head coach must be an active AVCA member and she must have received an honor indicating that she is a top player in her region or the country.   Alyssa was selected Mississippi Athletic Conference Player of the Year 2011, Clinton Herald Player of the Year 2011, 1st Team All Quad City Metro as a soph & junior, & MVP of the Sports’ Performance Presidents’ Day Qualifier in Shaumburg, Illinois.

Mark Massey:  “Obviously I am extremely happy & excited that Alyssa has been selected as the first CHS volleyball player to have been placed on this watch list.  This may be the highest honor that a CHS VB player has ever received while still at Clinton High School.  I think that this is a thrill for all CHS volleyball fans & reflects very positively, not only on Alyssa, but her teammates & the CHS.  I certainly plan to be nominating her after October 19, when nominations actually open up.  We try to establish a culture that allows student-athletes to thrive & achieve to high expectations not only in the classroom but as an athlete as well.  One of the things that I think is so cool about this “watch list” is that the AVCA selects the players.  Alyssa’s play in earning Player of the Year honors in the MAC & throughout her club experience earned her this attention.  I have had the good fortune to coach some very outstanding players, if you are discussing some of these very best then I think that you would obviously include Alyssa in this select group.  I am excited for Alyssa’s to go out and have a dominant senior season!!  This is quite an honor for Alyssa & her family!”

Full Release for Monique Harris on Under Armour Phenom List

American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) will release the fifth annual Under Armour Phenom List

On Monday, August 27 the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) will release the fifth annual Under Armour Phenom List and the inaugural AVCA Phenom List to kick-off its fall high school awards season.
The Under Armour Phenom List identifies elite high school junior volleyball players who possess the potential to be considered for the Under Armour High School All-America Awards Program.  Its counterpart, the AVCA Watch List, identifies elite high school seniors.  Both lists are comprised of high school volleyball players from across the country who have received honors identifying them as top players in their region or the country.  In order for a student-athlete to be eligible for inclusion on this list, her high school head coach must be an active AVCA member.  Clinton High Head Volleyball Coach Mark Massey is a long time AVCA member.  Monique Harris, has been identified by the AVCA as an elite rising high school volleyball student-athlete and will be recognized on the 2012 AVCA Phenom List that will be released on August 27.  The AVCA feels that Monique possesses the potential to participate in the 2012 AVCA Phenom College Preparatory Program.

The AVCA Phenom College Preparatory Program is a weekend of events held in conjunction with the AVCA Annual Convention.  The AVCA Phenom College Prep Program is an invitation-only event for unsigned Under Armour Watch List and AVCA Phenom athletes.  In 2012, the event will be held in Louisville, Kentucky from December 13 - 16. Participating student-athletes and their parents will attend educational sessions, the Under Armour All-America High School Volleyball Match, NCAA volleyball matches, interact with AVCA Collegiate All-Americans, undergo Volleyball Performance Index testing, and participate in the NCSA/AVCA Talent Showcase during which athletes will demonstrate their skills in front of the 100+ college coaches in attendance.

The AVCA Phenom College Prep Program is a weekend for student-athletes and their parents to learn, network and socialize.  The event is designed to prepare and educate participants and their parents about playing volleyball at the collegiate level.  Monique is one of the few volleyball players in the history of the Mississippi Athletic Conference to selected to the 1st Team as a Freshman & Sophomore.  She was also all-Quad Cities Metro both seasons, as well Clinton Herald All Area.

Mark Massey:  “This is a tremendous thrill for everyone associated with Clinton High School Volleyball & Monique’s family!  I can remember when Monique was younger being asked if I had ever had anyone set on the varsity before (I hadn’t) and did I think that Mo could possibly be the first? I believe I said, ‘we’ll see.’ It almost seems crazy that there was any doubt.  I probably have given Monique as much freedom as I’ve given any setter, her mother taught Mo to set early and she does it well, but it’s her all around game that makes her so tough.  She would probably be all-conference as a hitter or as a libero.  She made a play at the scrimmage the other day that you just ask yourself, “did I just see what I think I did?” I know that Mo is excited to get out & have an incredible season!

Release date to media:  21 August 2012

First Day!

A good start for approximately 15 varsity, 11 sophs, and 24 frosh at Clinton High School. The "new addition" definitely makes things go well.  With the small gym still available we have 5 decent courts & enough volleyballs.  We have an excellent facility and are off to a good start.  Hope to have a firm total tomorrow but I'm calling today's turnout 50+.  Volleyball continues to be a popular sport at CHS!

Freshmen practice

Great first practice freshmen! Practice will be Tuesday from 12-2 and 330-530.
