Queens defeat Davenport Assumption in 5!!

EVERYONE on TEAM did their job to put us in position to win. Hitters had great swings, blockers got some good touches, Mo drove us home... but I really do have to commend my JRs in back row & serving who fought off some tough swings from Assumption & some tough serves.  It was NOT easy but we survived & came back LATE in gm5.  You all have got to take some big positives from tonight!!

Clinton's David Johnson in the Des Moines Register

SATURDAY’S GAME

WHO: UNI (1-1)
at Iowa (1-1)

WHERE: Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City

TIME/TV: 2:30 p.m., Big Ten Network

CEDAR FALLS, IA. — The rejection stung.
David Johnson was sure he was going to end up playing at Kinnick Stadium as the heir apparent to punishing running backs Albert Young and Shonn Greene, chewing up yards and spitting out victories in eastern Iowa’s football shrine.
It was not to be. After a long recruiting process, Johnson got word that Iowa was not offering him a scholarship, and his options suddenly had dwindled to Illinois State or Northern Iowa.
“I was very surprised,” Johnson said. “I don’t know what happened. I was talking to Iowa all the way up to the week before signing day, and they said they weren’t going to offer me, so I said I’m going to come to UNI and show them why they should have offered me.”
He will get that chance to play in Kinnick after all, on Saturday when the Panthers visit for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff. The sophomore who starred at Clinton High School figures to get plenty of chances to carry the football as Northern Iowa looks to establish a running game against an Iowa team it hasn’t beaten since 1898.
Johnson, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 214 pounds, said he was told by Hawkeye recruiters that they were concerned that he would grow bored whenever the ball wasn’t in his hands, and just stand and watch as such plays unfolded. He concedes there was some truth to that.
“After I watched film of my high school career, I kind of did watch a little bit,” he said. “Because when you’re one of the best athletes for your school, you kind of get lackadaisical and you don’t really pay attention to what’s going on.”
Johnson swears those issues are behind him, as is one productive season at the FCS level and one impressive showing against a Big Ten team already this fall. Johnson ran for 822 yards and nine touchdowns as a redshirt freshman for Northern Iowa, adding 33 receptions for another 422 yards and three scores.
In the Panthers’ opener at Wisconsin two weeks ago, he scorched the Badgers for two long touchdown receptions as a fourth-quarter rally came up five points shy of victory.
“David’s just a big, strong running back where he can catch the ball out of the backfield, he can protect in the passing game, he’s always got the size and he has the ability to run through tackles, possibly,” Northern Iowa coach Mark Farley said. “And there’s a wear and tear factor. The more you play against a big running back, the more things can happen.
“Because he’s got size where he can just keep coming after you with size and strength. We just need to get him to that stage to where he can take advantage of the opportunities that his size gives him, and that’s more in the third and fourth quarter.”
Johnson barely played in a 59-0 breeze past Division II doormat Central State on Saturday, so he’s healthy and well rested for his first crack at the team that passed on him. He figures to get another one in 2014 as a senior.
For now, Johnson said he wants to be more decisive when carrying the ball, not worry about who’s in his way.
“I feel like I’m trying to find the hole too much. I think I should start making my own holes, just running over guys,” he said.
“Get the guys tired of tackling me, that’s what I hope to do.
Johnson will be joined in the backfield by senior Carlos Anderson, his 5-8, 172-pound counterpart who thrives on elusiveness, not brutishness. It’s a combination that can keep defenses off balance, Farley said.
“You try to get a bead on David to bring him down and then the other guy’s going to try to make a jump cut on you right at the end,” he said. “I think the burst of Carlos and the size of David is a nice complement as long as you can run the ball enough so that you have different targets, different speeds of target, coming at the opponent.”
Anderson is a Missouri native who was pursued by Iowa as a preferred walk-on, but opted to take the free education at Northern Iowa. He gained 75 yards against the Hawkeyes in a 17-16 loss at Kinnick in 2009, his debut game as a redshirt freshman, and has 2,009 for his career.
“I don’t know if I made them regret it or not. I tried to. I just came and played hard for who gave me my chance,” Anderson said.
“I don’t have time really to look back. I just thank God for giving me the opportunity here.”
Johnson also said he’s delighted to be wearing Panther purple. But he’s watched as the Hawkeyes have shuttled through tailback after tailback in recent years, and the pain of being told “no, thanks” is fresher for him.
“I hope they are second-guessing the decision,” he said of Iowa’s coaches. “Because I was a little down when I didn’t get a scholarship. But I’m glad that I came here and proved them wrong for not offering me.”

From the Muscatine Journal by Jake Ryder

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Even after the “all clear” was given at Muscatine High School Tuesday night, there was a different kind of fire on the volleyball court.
The Class 5A No. 7 Muscatine volleyball team dug in its heels against a strong Clinton attack before succumbing to the River Queens 3-2.
Clinton (9-6, 2-1 MAC) upended the Muskies 17-25, 25-13, 18-25, 25-23, 15-12.
Alyssa Wing led the River Queens with 22 kills and blasted in six kills in the fifth game.
“We were missing a few swings at times in the middle,” Clinton head coach Mark Massey admitted, “but we didn’t miss many in Game 5.”
The Muscatine (9-4, 3-1) attack was led by Katie Shoultz with 15 kills. Alex Walgren and Shayln Greenhaw added 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
The first conference defeat of the season for the Muskies (9-4, 3-1) did not come without a fight.
After being roughed up in Game 2, which at one point featured a 10-0 run by Clinton, the Muskies never trailed in the third set.
“They (Muscatine) were at their best,” Muscatine head coach Claire Rhoten noted. “They were at their quickest. We got hit too hard in that second game and they wanted revenge.”
In a match that was already hotly contested, Game 4 took it over the top.
Muscatine could not hold onto a 13-7 lead as Clinton setter Monique Harris laid out the table for the River Queens’ hitters to have a feast.
The score was 21-16 in favor of Clinton as fire alarms sounded inside the Muscatine gym.
A full evacuation was for naught as the false alarm brought the crowd, players and coaches back in just five minutes later.
“I was as surprised by the fire alarm as everyone else was,” Rhoten said. “I just told them to stay focused and play point-by-point and game-by-game because that’s all that we can do.”
The brief intermission was enough time for Muscatine to stage a quick comeback and attempt to end the match, getting as close as 22-23 before Wing shut the door with two kills in the final three rally points.
Wing, a 6-foot-2 senior, joined a tall front-line attack that tested Muscatine throughout the night.
For the most part, the smaller Muskies were able to respond with quick feet and even quicker thinking.
“They’re really quick,” Rhoten said of her team’s defensive efforts, “but they’re also working on reading everything. … Our back row defense is really reliable.”
Alex Walgren led Muscatine with 21 digs and libero Kaylee Jones contributed 18 digs.
“There’s some incredible liberos in this league,” Massey said, “and (Jones) is definitely one of them.”
On Tuesday, Clinton was just a little bit better in the final showdown.
“Tonight, they were the better team,” Rhoten said. “I really do think overall that we’re a better team, we just have to have confidence and believe that going forward.”
Massey said he didn’t expect the match to reach this level.
“It took our best effort of the season to beat them,” Massey said. “Wing was going up and she was putting some licks on the ball; … we’re not used to that ball coming back if it’s not blocked.”
Muscatine swept Clinton 2-0 at the Muskie Invite on Sept. 1.
The Muskies will get an opportunity at a rubber match when they travel to the River Queens Invitational Saturday.
Other MAC teams include Davenport Assumption, Davenport North and Davenport Central.
“We’re looking to play Assumption harder than we did at our own invite,” Rhoten said, “and hopefully we’ll see Clinton in the championships and get a chance to fight back.”
The Muscatine sophomores were victorious over Clinton 21-25, 25-12, 15-12.

Queens close well to beat Muskies

MUSCATINE — Trailing a ranked team two games to one was no problem for the Clinton volleyball team Tuesday night.

A fire alarm going off during the match wasn’t either.

The River Queens (9-6, 2-1 Mississippi Athletic Conference) beat Muscatine, ranked seventh in Class 5A, 17-25, 25-13, 18-25, 25-23, 15-12.

“It was a good win for us; I have a ton of respect for Muscatine,” Clinton coach Mark Massey said. “It would be tough to pick up a second MAC loss this early. We might feel like we lost contact with the people ahead of us. Now, I feel we’re right back in the mix.”

Clinton took early leads of 4-2 and 5-4 in Game 5, but Muscatine (9-4, 3-1) came back to tie the match at nine.

“It was back and forth,” Massey said. “In Game 5, we got points from a lot of different people serving. We always talk about runs. We had two runs of two and one of three. We held them to two runs of two but no three-point runs. That’s the difference in a 15-12 game.”

Another difference might be Alyssa Wing, who had six of her match-high 23 kills in the final game.

“I told her she was going to get the ball if I had a vote, and sometimes I’ve got an extra two or three electoral votes,” Massey said. “Monique (Harris) makes a pretty big difference, too. I told her as Muscatine got tired, it would be harder and harder for their block. They had a pretty good block most of the night. I trusted Mo to get Alyssa the ball in a good spot, and I trusted Alyssa to take a good swing at it.”

Harris had 49 assists in the match, and Wing knocked down the final kill to give Clinton the win. But Massey said it wasn’t an easy night for Wing, the reigning MAC player of their year.

“Muscatine’s libero was incredible,” he said. “She dug a lot of balls that Alyssa hit past the block, but Alyssa just brought back more. I think I’ve got some of the best players in the league. So I said, ‘Let’s roll them out and see what they can do.’ They didn’t disappoint.”

In Game 4, Clinton trailed early 10-4 and 13-8.

“Before Game 4, I told them if they won that one, they would win Game 5,” Massey said. “But it wasn’t looking really good. Then we got some really key serves from Elle (Tubbs). She had a big rotation and flipped it around.”

Erin Wenzel knocked down one of her 14 kills to give the River Queens a 21-16 lead in Game 4.

“It was a really big kill,” Massey said. “It turned on the fire alarm. I didn’t know she hit it hard enough to start a fire, though.”

Everyone was forced to go outside for four or five minutes, according to Massey, who said they treated it like an extended timeout.

“(Someone) mentioned it almost seemed like we were more focused when we started again, and that’s a credit to the kid’s mindset,” Massey said. “I think that might be the first time I’ve seen that. But I do have a little practice in that. Maybe four or five years ago in Yourd, we had a tornado warning. That one we had to go to the basement. This one was easy.”

Clinton finished off the fourth game and went on to win. Marquel Schultheis had two key blocks that forced sideouts during Game 4, as well.

“We had a good night all-around,” Massey said. “Everybody played well. It was fun. I’m really proud of the way the team played.”

Muscatine tops Clinton JV

Muscatine defeated Clinton 21-19, 21-13, 15-9 in junior varsity volleyball Tuesday night.

The River Queens were led by six kills from Hannah Dehner. Jordan Nelson dished out 10 assists. Dehner and Shannon Shovlain led the way with nine digs apiece, while Nelson and Gabby Haan each had eight.

Clinton sophomores fall

Muscatine defeated Clinton 21-25, 25-12, 15-12 on Tuesday night in sophomore volleyball action.

Rhegan Paulsen led the way with five kills. Raven Jones had seven assists, while Liz Wilke served two aces and Cheyenne Johnson had a block.

North Scott Tourn

Varsity did not make it to the afternoon, but still played very well throughout the morning! Iowa City High won a gm3 23-21, which is rather remarkable when you consider that we were playing to 15! We beat a scrappy DavWest team in two & then dropped a tough 3gm match to Bettendorf. A very solid day for us. The kids continue to grow as a team-I won't single any out but every girl played her role very well! Very proud of my team today!!! Lots of effort, persistence, unselfishness!!
